Reading Curriculum: SuperKids Reading
Goals: Implement and support student book skills, word analysis, phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding skills, vocabulary, fluency, sight word practice and comprehension

  • Reading is taught in whole groups and small guided reading groups.

  • Shared Reading takes place in a whole group setting where a Big Book is displayed for all to see. Children are encouraged to participate in the lesson focus by sharing ideas (such as predictions or connections) and read along with the teacher (to practice decoding skills, etc.)

  • Read Aloud takes place in a whole group setting where a book is read aloud by the teacher. Children are encouraged to participate in the lesson focus by sharing ideas. Read Aloud lessons often focus on giving opinions, making connections, doing a character study, learning about story structure, etc.

Heart Words

There are some words in Kindergarten, that are important for kids to read and spell, by heart, without even thinking about it. We call these "Heart Words". Every couple of weeks, your child will be sent home with a new color set of Heart Words! These words correlate with the word work we will be using with SuperKids. Please work on reading and writing these words at home. When children know these words by heart, it sets them up for success and makes reading and writing so much easier. Thank you for your continued at home support!
